Johnny Upgrade Retro Game Review - Dante

Image
Johnny Upgrade, a Cool Math Game Classic. It's a 2D platformer where you have to collect coins to then upgrade your stats. You have to defeat the evil robot boss. Your mission in the game? Save The World. You are greeted by some badass music and some buttons to press. Press play and begin your adventure to save the world. You will not be able to move for the first run because you have no speed. But you gain speed the next go you have, and you keep on gaining speed until you have jump and this continues for a short period as you progress. The game will highlight the upgrades you can get. You will continue upgrading until you fight the main boss, Robot. The graphics are very simplistic with no 3D aspect, but makes up for that in blasts of energy from your gun. It makes it easier to get across without having to avoid enemies but you have to save for a lot in order to get the ammo required. It only takes 4 hits with the gun to defeat the boss but before you will have to dodge all of i...

Run 3: Retro Game Review

Image
Run is a flash game created by Player 03. The 'Run' franchise has 3 games in total and 'Run 3' being the most successful in the series. Run 3, also known as simply 'Run' has 2 modes:  Explore, where the player had to find and map out over last one of the level sets. There are currently 309 levels that are accessible from the 'explore' mode across 21 level sets. The entirety of the plot takes place in this mode alone. (mostly) Infinite, this version has you playing through a randomized selection of 325 pre-built levels. And with every meter you travel, it is kept track of and displayed at the top left of the screen. The obvious goal is to get as far as you can without failing a level. With the highest distances saved on a leaderboard that is viewable in the main menu of the game. There are items called 'Power Cells', they are scattered throughout every level in the 'infinite' mode. Their frequency and value increases alongside your distan...

Super Mario Bros. 3 Review

Image
Super Mario Bros. 3 was made in 1988 developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development. Players control brothers Mario and Luigi who have to save Princess Toadstool and the 7 rulers from the main antagonist Bowser. By defeating enemies, in previous games, the player must jump and land on their head thereby stomping on them. Sometimes the player gains some items the grants powers and special abilities which makes it easy to defeat enemies and progress further in the game. The main plot of Super Mario Bros. 3 is that the mushroom world is invaded by Koopalings, Bowser's seven children. The Koopalings dominate over each of the seven kingdoms by stealing the kings magical wands and using it to transform him to a creature/animal. The princess sends Luigi and Mario to travel to each of the kingdoms and retrieve the stolen wands and restore the kings to normal. The graphics are as you would imagine from a game from 1988, with no concept of 3D and a very narrow screen for very o...

Terraria Review: Retro Game Coursework.

Image
Terraria is a 2D action adventure game that is set to be a sandbox type game. The game was released on May 16 2011. And you may be wondering, Terraria isn't a retro game, well I beg to differ. Terraria is a game that takes 2D to a new level when it comes to gameplay. It brings over 10 bosses and more than 200 enemies to fight. When the game first released it looked bland and really boring, but when you got further in the game it becomes clear that you need to take your time as this was no easy game to beat. It is a game that makes you feel comfortable at day, but paranoid at night due to the random boss spawns that can occur. When you gather ore from caves and the underground, it becomes clear that you are most certainly not alone, you hear zombies and skeletons and sometimes different biome dungeons. You have to have to be smart and thoughtful of your actions if you want to survive. The overall gameplay if very smooth with the guide there as a walking talking tutorial. It's a ...

Balloon Tower Defense Review

Image
Retro Game Review: Made within the 2000's, Balloon Tower Defense made a name for its self rather quickly becoming a highly trending game within the children community. Its comes with a bright and colourful main screen that also advertises more games made by the same people as a little feature. The main game its self was easy enough to understand but the main issue I have for the game is that it comes with a few bugs. When I wanted to pick a monkey to upgrade, there was a screen in the way but got past that fairly easy. There is no storyline to this game only a chill back experience for people who want to become overpowered quickly to feel good. The quality is as you would expect from an old game by not being 3D and having minimal options to choose from. It gives a basic GUI which makes it easy to read but makes it bland compared to the future generations of the game. It gives multiple options when choosing a monkey to help fight but for me it wasn't enough. As you get further ...

Retro Game Review: Minecraft 2009

Image
Minecraft was a idea created by a man named Markus Persson who is more commonly known as 'Notch', the father of Minecraft. The game is a 3D sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios where players can travel the world, fight monsters and face bosses in different dimensions. It was made to the public in May 2009 before being fully released in November 2011 with 'Notch' stepping down and letting Jens 'Jeb' Bergensten taking over development. It has become the best selling video game in history with over 238 million copies being sold nationally, and with over 140 million monthly players. Gameplay: The game requires little to no instructions on how to play and with no goals to accomplish, players are granted freedom to what they wish. Some players choose to march through and focus their efforts on getting all the achievements known as 'advancements'. Since this assignment was for 'retro' games I decided to play on the older version on Minecraft to not...

Retro Game Review: Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga

Image
Beginning: The game is based off the nostalgic movie franchise, Star Wars, made by LucasArts in 1977. The movie was a hit and gained much attention and a large reputation amongst the world. It took over the Sci-Fi industry becoming a top hit and will remain that way for many more years to come. Graphics: The graphics that I was introduced to at the beginning are very good for when it was made, giving 3D graphics. The game was very smooth with little to no errors when using the camera, but in some situations it got a little tricky as I was trying to see a pair of droids put my camera was in a wall so I could not see. But after that there were no more issues. There weren't any other issues that majorly concerned me but there were little parts of the game where it didn't load in properly but it was easy enough to guide around. Story: The story was very involved in that it was very fluid, everything made sense however there were some instances that made the game very goofy and sill...
